IEV(AFP) -- Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev is due Thursday in Kiev to discuss supplying Ukraine and western Europe with energy and sign cooperation deals, his country's embassy in Kiev said Monday.

"Providing oil and gas to Ukraine" will be discussed during the visit, embassy cousellor Kairtai Zhanbatyrov told AFP.

"It is a very important issue for Ukraine," and also for Kazakhstan, he said.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushschenko wants to strengthen his country's links with Europe by transporting oil from the Caspian Sea area, in particular from Kazakhstan, through the pipeline linking the terminal at Brody in western Ukraine with the port of Odessa on the Black Sea.

At the moment the flow goes in the opposite direction, with Russian oil flowing from Brody southwards to Odessa.

Five agreements are due to be signed Friday, including accords on supplies of Kazakh oil to Ukraine and the extension of a bilateral free trade area, Zhanbatyrov said.

An agreement on cooperation with a view to membership of the World Trade Organisation, sought by both countries, will also be on the agenda.

Nazarbayev and Yushchenko will hold face to face talks Friday and take part in a bilateral economic forum, Ukrainian officials said.
